About
Half lawyers, half engineers. Entirely on your side.
Precedent Labs was founded in 2017 by an M&A partner and a software engineer who were tired of legal tools that made lawyers adapt to the software, instead of the other way round. We have been building it the other way round ever since.
How Precedent Labs started
Precedent Labs started in two rooms above a sandwich shop on Fetter Lane in the spring of 2017. Eleanor Whitcombe had spent eleven years in the M&A group at Freshfields, the last four as a partner, and had lost count of the tools that were bought for her team and quietly abandoned. Tomasz Nowak had spent the same decade building data systems at Palantir and Thomson Reuters, and had watched lawyers work around software rather than with it.
The observation they shared was simple. Legal software was designed for a hypothetical lawyer and then sold to real ones. The real ones had an iManage workspace with fifteen years of folder conventions, a redlining habit that lived in Word, and a partner who would not sign off on anything she could not check herself. The tools ignored all of that, and so the tools were ignored.
Nobody had asked the associates what they actually did all day. So that is where we started, and it is still where we start.
The first project was a diligence tracker for a corporate team of nine. It was not ambitious. It sat inside the firm's existing iManage workspace, matched the way the team already named their folders, and saved each associate roughly a day a week. The firm is still a client. So is the tracker, now in its sixth version.
Nine years on, we are sixty people across London, New York and Toronto: engineers, product designers, and former practising lawyers who sit on every project team. The method has not changed. Shadow the team before writing code. Build inside the tools they already use. Cite everything. Ship every week. Stay.
How we think
Six rules we have not broken since 2017.
They are not slogans. Each one is a decision we make on every engagement, and each one has cost us at least one project we were glad to lose.
-
01
Shadow first, build second.
We spend the first two to three weeks of every engagement sitting with the team and mapping how work actually moves. The prototype comes after that, never before.
-
02
The tool lives where the work already happens.
If your associates draft in Word and file in iManage, that is where the tool goes. We do not ask anyone to open a new tab to do their job.
-
03
Every AI output cites its source.
A finding without a page reference is an opinion. Everything our review tools produce links to the passage it came from, so a partner can check it in one click.
-
04
Weekly releases, from week one.
Something usable ships every Friday, starting with the first Friday. Small releases mean small surprises, and a team that sees progress rather than reads about it.
-
05
Lawyers on every project team.
Each build has at least one former practising lawyer on it, in the room, with a vote. They catch the assumptions engineers do not know they are making.
-
06
We run what we build.
We host, monitor and keep improving every tool we ship. Most clients stay three years or more, which we think is a better measure than a launch date.
Leadership
Six people you will actually meet.
Nobody here is a figurehead. Every one of them runs discovery, sits in on releases, or answers the phone when something goes wrong at 7pm.
-
Eleanor Whitcombe
Co-founder & CEO
Eleven years in M&A at Freshfields, the last four as a partner. Still reads every playbook we ship before it goes to a client.
-
Tomasz Nowak
Co-founder & CTO
Built data platforms at Palantir and Thomson Reuters. Holds that most legal software has roughly three times too many screens.
-
Priya Raman
Head of Product
Led practice-management product at Clio. Runs discovery on our largest engagements herself, notebook in hand.
-
Daniel Achebe
Head of Legal Engineering
Nine years as a commercial litigator before changing sides. Leads the lawyers who sit on every project team.
-
Sofia Lindqvist
Head of Design
Designs tools that look like they belong next to the documents they sit beside. Has firm views on the width of a redline bar.
-
Marcus Bell
Head of Delivery
Runs the weekly release cadence across forty-plus client teams. The reason Friday is a day we ship rather than a day we hope.

Offices
Three cities, one time zone away from most of our clients.
Every project team sits in the office nearest the client, and every office has lawyers in it. The addresses are real. Come by.

Careers
We hire lawyers who can't stop asking why, and engineers who want to know what a rider is.
Most of what we build is decided in conversations between the two. If you have ever rewritten a form because the people filling it in kept getting it wrong, you will probably like it here.

Salary bands are published in every listing. Everyone gets thirty days' leave, a proper pension contribution, private healthcare, and a budget for the courses and conferences they choose rather than the ones we choose for them. Hybrid by default; the offices are there when you want them. Nothing listed that fits? Write to careers@precedentlabs.com and say what you would do here.
